In a surprising twist, the Euro 2024 qualifier match between Belgium and Sweden was suddenly stopped at halftime because of a possible terrorist attack in Brussels. Two people from Sweden were sadly killed by shots in the attack. The players did not come back to play in the second part of the game, and the fans were told to stay in the King Baudouin stadium because it was safer for them.
UEFA confirmed that the match has been cancelled after talking to the teams and local authorities. The leader of Belgium said that the event was a terrorist act. Sadly, it has been reported that the victims were wearing the shirt of the Swedish national team.
The Swedish Football Association expressed their sympathy and asked fans to remain safely within the stadium. Belgium’s national team also showed their support for those who were affected.
Before the game stopped, Belgium, who had already secured a spot in the Euro 2024 tournament, scored a goal to tie the game. This goal was made by Romelu Lukaku from a penalty kick, in response to Viktor Gyokeres‘ goal for Sweden. It is said that the Swedish players chose to stop playing the game after they found out about the attack.
