Russia’s Defense Ministry announced a successful test fire of a Yars intercontinental ballistic nuclear missile on Friday, as reported by news agency TASS. At the state test cosmodrome Plesetsk, crews from the Yoshkar-Ola missile formation executed a combat training launch of a mobile-based solid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile PGRK Yars, equipped with multiple warheads.

The training warheads reached the designated area at the Kura training ground on the Kamchatka Peninsula (translated from Russian),” stated the Russian Defense Ministry, the report added. The launch aimed to verify the tactical, technical, and flight characteristics of the modern missile system, the statement asserted, confirming the accomplishment of all designated tasks.

The test comes in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s caution against “increased Western involvement” in the Ukraine conflict, highlighting the potential for a “global nuclear conflict”. In a two-hour address, Putin criticized Western leaders as reckless and irresponsible, warning about the genuine threat of a nuclear conflict that could result in the “destruction of our civilization”. “We also possess the capability to strike targets on their territory, and what they are currently proposing and frightening the world with, all that heightens the genuine threat of a nuclear conflict that would signify the destruction of our civilization,” Putin remarked.

The RS-24 (Yars) missile, measuring 23 meters in length, is engineered to carry multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs). MIRVs enable the Yars missile to deploy multiple nuclear warheads, each capable of targeting distinct objectives.

The Yars represents a modified version of the Topol-M missile system. Russia initiated the deployment of Yars Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) systems in 2009, with the Yars launcher approved for experimental combat duty in the Strategic Missile Force. In December, Russian rocket forces positioned a new Yars ICBM into a silo at the Kozelsk base in the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow.
