A spokesperson for the Oberoi Group confirmed that Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, affectionately known as ‘Biki’ and a revered figure in Indian hospitality, breathed his last on the morning of November 14.11.2023 at the age of 94. The company’s official statement expressed deep sadness at the passing of its revered leader, while also highlighting the significant impact of his passing on the Oberoi Group and the entire hotel industry.
The Oberoi Group announced that the cremation of PRS Oberoi will take place at the Bhagwanti Oberoi Charitable Trust, Oberoi Farm, Kapashera, from 4 pm on the same day. The statement invited members of the Oberoi group and their acquaintances to attend and pay their respects, and called for prayers to be held for PRS Oberoi at hotels and headquarters.
Recognized as a visionary who transformed India’s hotel landscape, PRS Oberoi played a pivotal role in elevating Oberoi Hotels to an international level by building luxury properties in key cities. Born on February 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Rai Bahadur MS Oberoi, founder of the Oberoi Group, and was educated in India, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Known for its belief in the primary importance of people in an organization and its emphasis on quality hotel management, PRS Oberoi has received many awards throughout its illustrious career.
These awards include Padma Vibhushan in 2008, Lifetime Achievement Award at ILTM, ‘World Corporate Hotelier of the Year 2010‘ award and others.( also read Kevin Turen Producer ).
Industry leaders offered their condolences, with Jet Airways CEO Sanjiv Kapoor praising Biki Oberoi as a true legend who perfected the art of detail and enhanced visual hospitality. Industrialist Anand Mahindra also expressed his grief, acknowledged Oberoi’s pivotal role in establishing “Oberoi” as a global symbol of lavish Indian hospitality and praised his resilience in leading the group after the November 26 attack on its Mumbai flagship. Anand Mahindra concluded by describing the PRS Oberoi as a collective action and offered his sincere condolences.
