PM’s address at G20 Culture Meeting

G20 Culture Meeting, Namaste

I extend a warm welcome to Varanasi, also known as Kashi. It brings me great joy that you have chosen to convene in Varanasi, which holds a special place as my Parliamentary Constituency. Kashi is not merely the world’s oldest living city; it is also home to Sarnath, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon. Kashi embodies the essence of “सुज्ञान, धर्म, और सत्यराशि” – a repository of wisdom, duty, and truth. Undoubtedly, it stands as the cultural and spiritual heart of India. I hope you find time in your itinerary to witness the captivating Ganga Aarti, explore the historic Sarnath, and savor the culinary delights that Kashi has to offer.

Culture possesses an innate ability to unite. It allows us to embrace diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Therefore, your deliberations hold profound significance for all of humanity. In India, we take immense pride in our timeless and diverse culture. We also hold our Intangible Cultural Heritage in high esteem. We have been resolute in our efforts to safeguard and rejuvenate our heritage sites. We have meticulously documented our cultural assets and artists, not only at the national level but also in every village across India. Moreover, we are establishing numerous centers to celebrate our rich cultural tapestry. Of notable mention are the tribal museums dispersed throughout the country, showcasing the vibrant heritage of India’s tribal communities. In New Delhi, we are in the process of creating the Prime Ministers’ Museum – a pioneering initiative that showcases India’s democratic legacy. Additionally, the upcoming ‘Yuge Yugeen Bharat’ National Museum, upon completion, will stand as the world’s largest museum, chronicling India’s historical and cultural journey spanning over five millennia.

The matter of restoring cultural artifacts holds significant importance. I commend your efforts in this endeavor. After all, tangible heritage is not only of material value; it encapsulates a nation’s history and identity. Everyone should have the opportunity to access and relish their cultural heritage. Since 2014, India has successfully repatriated numerous artifacts that embody the grandeur of our ancient civilization. I also applaud your dedication to the concept of ‘living heritage’ and your contributions to the ‘Culture for LiFE’ initiative. Indeed, cultural heritage is not confined to static objects; it encompasses the traditions, customs, and festivities passed down through generations. I am confident that your endeavors will cultivate sustainable practices and ways of life.

We firmly believe that heritage serves as a vital asset for economic growth and diversification. This philosophy resonates in our motto, ‘Vikas Bhi Virasat Bhi‘ – Development as well as Heritage. India takes immense pride in its 2,000-year-old craft heritage, encompassing nearly 3,000 distinct arts and crafts. Our ‘One District, One Product’ initiative showcases the uniqueness of Indian craftsmanship while fostering self-reliance. Your efforts in promoting Cultural and Creative Industries carry profound significance. They will foster inclusive economic development, champion creativity and innovation. In the upcoming months, India is set to launch the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, featuring an initial allocation of 1.8 billion dollars. This endeavor will create a support ecosystem for traditional artisans, enabling them to flourish in their crafts and contribute to the preservation of India’s cultural heritage.

Companions

Technology stands as a valuable ally in celebrating culture. In India, the National Digital District Repository has allowed us to rediscover the stories of our struggle for independence. We are employing technology to ensure the better preservation of our cultural landmarks and enhance the tourist experience.
