Optus, the second-largest telecommunications provider in Australia with 10.2 million customers, experienced a major nationwide outage on Wednesday morning.
This outage affected the ability of Optus customers to make calls or access the internet on its mobile and national broadband network services. The problem was first reported by users around 4 am.
Optus has acknowledged the issue and is actively working to restore services promptly. The company understands the importance of connectivity and has apologized for any inconvenience caused to its customers.
In a statement, Optus reassured customers that they can still dial triple zero in case of an emergency, ensuring that critical emergency services remain accessible. Furthermore, this outage has also impacted certain eftpos terminals and caused disruptions for Uber drivers on the Optus network, preventing them from using the Uber app.
At the same time, Melbourne’s entire suburban train network experienced a halt on Wednesday morning due to a “communications outage.” While it is unclear whether this issue is directly linked to the Optus outage, Melbourne’s train services have now resumed, although significant delays are expected throughout the morning.
