Jabalia: Mohammed Al-Najjar, a 33-year-old Gazan, expressed his shock and disorientation upon returning home to find much of the Jabalia refugee camp in ruins after an Israeli offensive.

“All the houses have been reduced to rubble,” Najjar told AFP in Jabalia, located in the northern Gaza Strip. “You are lost, you do not know where exactly your house is in the middle of this massive destruction.”

Israeli forces conducted a significant bombardment campaign in Jabalia in recent weeks as part of a fierce ground offensive in northern Gaza, an area the military had previously declared to be beyond the control of Hamas militants.

“I was shocked by the extent of the destruction in the latest aggression on Jabalia camp,” said Najjar.

In recent days, numerous Palestinians have returned to the area, attempting to locate their homes and salvage whatever belongings remain. Streets that were once bustling with life are now filled with debris and remnants of destroyed buildings.

Despite the devastation, residents like Suad Abu Salah, 47, are determined to rebuild their lives. “We have no other place other than our homes,” she said. However, she lamented that “Jabalia has been wiped off the map.”

The conflict, which has been ongoing for nearly eight months, was sparked by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel in October, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.

Despite the destruction and ongoing violence, many residents remain resolute in their desire to stay on their land and rebuild their community.

“We want to live like other people in the world,” Abu Salah said. “We need a solution and an end to this war, so that we can live in peace.”
