Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is back on X, which used to be called Twitter. He was banned for five years because he kept breaking the platform’s rules. Elon Musk welcomed Jones back with a big party after staying away from public events for a while. The meeting caused disagreement and also had people like Jack Posobiec who believes in the Pizzagate conspiracy, Laura Loomer who is against Muslims, the former national security adviser Mike Flynn, Andrew Tate, and republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.
This change is a big turnaround for Musk. A year ago, he had serious doubts about bringing back Jones because he spread lies about the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting. Jones is saying that the judge was unfair because of politics and he was just asking questions and giving his opinions. He says this now that he’s back in public.
Jones wants to use X to raise lots of money for gun safety for Sandy Hook families. Musk asked X users if they wanted Jones to come back. 701% of the 7. 9 million people said yes. Even though Musk disagreed with Jones’s comments about Sandy Hook, he allowed Jones to have his account back, but with a warning that he is not allowed to talk about Sandy Hook.

Some people think bringing it back is a win for free speech. But, others say it might only be because companies stopped advertising on X. X has lost a lot of users and money from ads. Some people see Musk’s actions, like telling advertisers to “go f**k yourself,” as him standing up against letting advertisers control the story on the platform. X‘s revenues decreased by 60% last year and they might lose even more money. This shows that Musk is having a hard time leading the company.
