History
The Indian Air Force, also known as the Bharatiya Vayu Sena, was established on October 8, 1932, during the British colonial era. The first operational squadron commenced on April 1, 1933, with six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys (air soldiers). Its initial aircraft inventory included four Westland Wapiti IIA army co-operation biplanes stationed at Drigh Road, forming the “A” Flight nucleus of the planned No.1 (Army Co-operation) Squadron. In January 1950, India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth, leading to the Indian Air Force dropping its “Royal” prefix.
