Virat Kohli recently broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs scored in a calendar year in ODI cricket. Kohli did really well in a game against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium. He reached the milestone of scoring one thousand runs in a year, which is a new record.
But it’s important to know that Kohli hasn’t beaten Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries. Tendulkar has scored 49 centuries in his amazing career.
Kohli has scored over 1,000 runs in a year on eight different occasions: from 2011 to 2014, 2017 to 2019, and 2023. However, Sachin was able to do it seven times. He did this in the years 1994, 1996 to 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2007.
Besides Kohli, two other Indian batsmen achieved the milestone of scoring more than one thousand runs in the calendar year.
Recently, an old video became very popular on the internet. It shows Sachin Tendulkar predicting that Virat Kohli will surpass his achievements.

Kohli almost matched Sachin’s record of 49 ODI centuries, but he got out because of a slower delivery from Dilshan Madushanka. Kohli hit the ball towards a field position called short cover, but Nissanka made a great catch by diving low. This situation made the crowd at the Wankhede Stadium silent, because they were really excited to see Kohli reach his milestone.
During the game, Kohli faced 94 balls and hit 11 fours. He was on the Indian team that won the World Cup in 2011, playing against Sri Lanka at the same place.
