On October 19, Virat Kohli did something amazing in the world of cricket, going beyond the record that Sachin Tendulkar had previously set. Kohli now has the record for quickest batsman ever to score 26,000 runs in cricket. Before the game against Bangladesh, Kohli had scored a total of 25,923 runs from 566 times being at bat. He accomplished this important achievement during a cricket match called the World Cup in Pune by hitting an impressive six.
Virat Kohli beats Sachin Tendulkar has now become the fourth-highest scorer in world cricket. He has scored a total of 26,026 runs in 567 games, including 78 centuries and 134 half-centuries. There are only three players who have scored more runs in their careers than him. These players are Ricky Ponting, Kumara Sangakkara, and Sachin Tendulkar. Mahela Jayawardene has now become the fifth top scorer in cricket with 25,957 runs.
In ODI World Cups, Virat Kohli has scored 1,289 runs in 30 matches. He has scored three centuries and has an average of 53. 70 runs in the World Cup.
What makes this historic journey special
is that Kohli made his first World Cup appearance in 2011 and scored a hundred runs against Bangladesh. Surprisingly, his most recent World Cup century on October 19, 2023, was also against Bangladesh. In 2015, he had also scored one hundred runs against Pakistan in Adelaide.
But, it is important to mention that there was some controversy surrounding Kohli’s 48th ODI century against Bangladesh. Referee Richard Kettleborough’s choice to not give a Wide Ball when it was an important part of the game caused a lot of talk. This happened when Kohli was almost at 100 and Nasum Ahmed was throwing the ball. In shorter cricket games, when the ball is thrown off course towards the leg side, it is usually called a Wide Ball. However, Kettleborough did not make that call on this particular occasion.
