54 Dead In 72 Hours

UP Clinic,54 Dead In 72 Hours At UP Clinic; “Not Due To Warm,” Says Test Group

In the past 72 hours, a distressing situation has unfolded at a hospital in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, with reports of 54 deaths and approximately 400 individuals hospitalized. The sudden surge in deaths and admissions, characterized by symptoms such as fever, breathing difficulties, and other ailments, has put a strain on the hospital and prompted heightened vigilance among its staff.

  • Initially, government doctors stationed in the district speculated that the deaths might be attributed to a heatwave.
  • However, a senior government doctor from Lucknow, heading an investigative committee formed to delve into the matter, has refuted this theory.
  • Dr. AK Singh, the senior government doctor, stated that the deaths do not appear to be heatwave-related based on preliminary observations.
  • He pointed out that nearby districts facing similar weather conditions have not reported comparable death tolls.
  • The initial symptoms displayed by the deceased patients, primarily chest pain, are not indicative of heatwave-related ailments.

Dr. Singh further suggested that the deaths may be linked to water-related causes, and an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the role of water in these incidents. Samples of water will be examined by the climate department as part of this inquiry.

Earlier in the day, a doctor holding the position of Chief Medical Superintendent in Ballia was relieved of his duties due to his statement, which went viral, attributing many of the deaths to heatstroke. The removal was justified by the UP Health Minister, Brajesh Pathak, citing the doctor’s lack of accurate information and careless statement on heatwave-related deaths.

The opposition, led by Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, has criticized the state government for the fatalities. Yadav held the government accountable for not issuing a warning about the heatwave and lamented the absence of any new district hospitals in the past six years. He argued that the victims, primarily poor farmers, perished due to delayed access to food, medication, and timely treatment.

Brajesh Pathak, the UP Health Minister, assured that the government is treating the incident in Ballia with utmost seriousness, personally overseeing the situation.
